On November 8-9, 1969, Ed drove Johnny Bryant’s coupe at the Martinsville Cardinal 500 after his regular car, the Mills-Welch #79, developed engine problems. He finished 8th in the 50-lap qualifying race and tangled with Don Diffendorf on lap 341 of the feature.

Although hard to see, Ed is near the back in John Bryant’s #57.

This is Ken Canestrari in his own car. Mike Abdella, who was on Ken’s crew, has reported that at Malta in about 1970 Ken asked Ed to drive the car and help him to improve its handling. When Ed drove the car he was amazed at how badly it handled, but he was able to help Ken set it up correctly.

Here Ed is standing next to the Gene Dewitt-owned #7, normally driven so successfully by Dutch Hoag. This may have been late in the 1970 season when Dutch was unwell and had other drivers substitute for him at certain races. I don’t know whether Ed actually drove this car, but who could have been a better substitute than he?

On July 17, 1971, Ed drove John Rosati’s late model Fairlane in a 100-lap race at Catamount. He finished 2nd, but the winning car was protested by another entrant and ultimately Ed may have been awarded first place.

On October 31, 1971, Thompson held a 150 lap open-competition race for both Modifieds and Super-Modifieds. Ed drove the Mystic Missile to first place for Modifieds and third place overall. I believe that this was the car that Ed drove in that race. Photo from Vintagemodifieds.com

Ed Jr
1973-04-14 – Ed Jr’s first car and first race. Ed Sr drove it initially, before his son ever did, in order to make sure that it was set up properly, and again later that year at the Riverside All-Star show.

This is Ed at Lee on 1973-05-27, when he drove Bobby Turner’s #85 coupe in a 100-lap race. He was a DNF, officially classified as 15th.

Ed was scheduled to drive one of the Clarence’s Steak House Gremlins, usually raced by Paul Radford, at the Martinsville 150 on September 29th, 1973, but there is no record of whether he did so.
$
1973-10-21 – Thompson. Ed drove this Falcon six years after he previously raced it. It appears that, in the first race that day, his usual ride the 2x Pinto had a problem and he jumped into the $ as a last-minute back-up. Thanks to Thomas Schmeh.
500
Ed drove the #500 Pinto (owned by Jarb Beaudoin and normally driven by Bill Greco, shown here) at Riverside on 04-20-74. He won his semi-final but an oil leak forced him to drop out of the feature.

Ed drove the Jarb’s #500 Pinto at Riverside on April 20, 1974.
06
1974-07-14 – The #06 was previously the Art Barry #09 that Ed drove to many top finishes in 1971. Art sold it to Dave Spence who in turn sold it to Ed and Rocky Germani, who with Ed had co-owned the ¢ in 1964-66. In 1974 the #06 was driven once or twice by Ed and a few times by Ed Jr, who is shown here unable to avoid the spinning Gene Naumec at Thompson. Heath photo.
