After Al Hansen crashed Edward Ackerman’s “Ace of Spades” at Thompson, Ed as a favour brought the wreck back to Ackerman’s garage.

The Vitari-Bombacci V8 driven by Bill Slater was a very successful combination for most of the 1960s. This anecdote sheds light on an illegal engine arrangement that the team ran for some time. Ed suspected that something about the engine was not what it should have been, but the team lied about its having a dead battery, which prevented him from discovering the truth.
