Ted Tappett
Ted Tappett, a Long islander whose real name was Phil Walters, raced before and after WW2, first in midgets, then in modifieds and in sports cars, including at Le Mans and Sebring, which he won twice. He turned down invitations to drive at the Indy 500, saying that he could earn more money during the month of May by racing modifieds.
