May 7, 1960 – This is said to be a picture of Pete after a crash while he was using an acetylene torch to cut away the crushed bodywork trapping his leg. The injuries he suffered ultimately necessitated that his lower leg be amputated. Despite this disability, Pete went on to win many more races.
